WordPress Garland Port

UPDATE: This post has been superseded by Garland for Wordpress 2.2!

Someone in #wordpress requested a link to the WordPress port of the Garland theme1.

I realized that there probably wasn’t a pre-packaged version of it, so I checked it out of the WordPress.com SVN2 and zipped it up with my own two little hands.

You can now snag the Garland theme for WordPress from http://incoherentcode.com/wp-content/uploads/garland.zip.

Enjoy!

Note: Just to clarify, this isn’t a theme I made… It was ported by the folks over at Wordpress.com, I just happened to be the lucky guy to make a zip of it. See here for the announcement of its availability on WP.com.

Update: I’ve moved the location of the Garland download. You can now access the downloads at the links below. Each file is updated daily at 1am to ensure it’s constantly in sync with the current SVN copy — just in case those sneaky devs over at Automattic decide to make any updates!

    Hello,
The Colorpicker in the WP-Admin doesn’t work. The dictionary of the Garland theme is “wp-content/themes/pub/garland”.

    Please help me,

    Best Regards
    Westbär

WestBar obviously hasn’t read your previous posts… :P

    Obviously not, Cal…

Westbar, this is not a support forum, and as I said I didn’t develop the theme, I just packaged it.

All that said, off the top of my head I’d say you’ve got your theme in the wrong place. Perhaps you could try moving the garland directory into wp-content/themes/ instead of wp-content/themes/pub/ ?

If you require further assistance, please check the Support page at Wordpress.org. The mailing lists, IRC channel, and support forums are a wealth of knowledge, information, and assistance.

    that’s really classy.

did you miss all the discussion over how insensitive the original port was?

i’m assuming, then that you also didn’t remove matt’s name from the credits for the stupid thing?

you’re not the only one who can find the ’semi-secret’ location of their internal SVN. just the only one who thinks releasing the theme is a good idea.

Adam: No, I didn’t miss the controversy over the original port, I just fail to see the point. I realize there were a number of Drupal people who were upset over WordPress.com releasing Garland before the official Drupal release, but I can’t say I particularly understand their feelings. If you ask me, placing that much importance on a lousy theme is poor planning. Developing a unified “branding” for a CMS seems a very unwise tactic to me, since no self-respecting site of any real stock (read: corporate sites, popular blogs, etc.) is going to stick with the default. No, they’re going to create their own theme, ignoring the precious Garland theme.

In any case, no, I didn’t remove Matt’s name from the credits. I haven’t even looked at the credits, I just checked out whatever was in the Wordpress.com SVN.

I also realize I’m not the only one who knows where the WP.com SVN is. I didn’t expect anyone to gather that from my comment, I was simply pointing out why I was releasing a packaged version. And I’m obviously not the only one who thinks releasing this is a good idea. If I were, no one would have ever requested a download link for it, and WP.com wouldn’t have anyone using it.

So thank you for your comment, but I’d appreciate it if you’d keep your obsessive Drupal loyalty to yourself. It’s a theme. If that’s all you’ve got going for you, maybe it’s time to take a new look at your project’s direction and focus…

    Have a lovely day!

Finally! I have come across this link your site and the Garland link… bloody marvellous.
I have been wanking around the courteous route for months, contacting the various players, Drupal and Wp.com, through Forum and direct email/comments, trying to get my head around why the goddam thing was released to the general Wp community… now that “they” supposedly resolved the “conflicts” of professional courtesy, ego, and whatever else was infringed upon or damaged during the original port to Wp.com, and the “encroachment” of Drupal’s “big launch”.
As sometime has passed since those days… it’s amazes me that neither parties have actually swalled their “injured” rights, and just let the us users acces to it as per most other Wp themes. I’m thinking no-ones goin’ to do such, as they don’t won’t to run the “risk” of setting-up any of the “gurus” and “masters” that control these worlds, ie. Drupal and or Wordpress.
So, to you Chris… good on you and thx for running the “gaunlet” ;-) (Now I need to see if the version you’ve given actually works?) Anyway, have a great day…

    Hi Chirs,

Thanks a ton for the theme. I just wish it worked as it is supposed to do, but alas, it doesn’t!

Has anyone got the theme installed and working properly?

I tried it on 3 of my wordpress sites hosted on different servers. It just doesn’t work. The color picker wheel stubbornly refuses to appear in the theme administration page.

Has anyone else been successful in getting this to work?
    Please share your experience.

    Thanks!

As with you Devilzown, I was initially “excited” the “hot and bothered” then “bothered” now “cold”, re Garland… no the colour selection/wheel thing does not fully load and is virtually unusable… so no go on my personal site…. I use Garland inside Wp.com on 2 blogs and love it… I wish “they” would just release the “official” theme to the General Wp user community…
Chris’ effort to get it out to folks like us is commendable… though the resulting usage negligible….

Does anyone know where to download Garland Widget Ready theme? please email cnkjml@yahoo.com

  14. 14 Sabine

Thank you for porting it! anyway, my opinion is that since its open source, why complain? But the wordpress people should have packaged it really..

  15. 15 plonut

All these links are dead man…. what the hell happened?

  16. 16 Chris Meller

plonut: Looks like Dreamhost somehow axed my entire ‘uploads’ directory on that account. I’ll try to rectify the situation later tonight and post an update. I’ll also drop you an email to the address you commented with…
